Sing The Rhythm
Before you play, try and sing or tap the rhythm first. This will help get it in your head before you attempt to play it. This applies to both Chords and Lead lines and licks.

Count Out Loud
When practicing a rhythm, count out loud. Say then main beats – 1,2,3,4 or 1,2,3 etc. It really does help even if you feel a bit self-conscious to begin with.

Play with your eyes shut
If you can remember a piece of music, try playing it with your eyes shut. Doing so brings your other senses to the fore. This can help you with your awareness as to where your hands are on the guitar. Don’t stress too much if you make a few mistakes.

Practice playing along with the song. This will help you with your timing, rhythm and changes. I also helps you learn it. Plus, it’s a lot of fun

If you concentrate on alternate picking when you are practicing your scales, it will help you get into the habit of it. Alternate picking is an essential technique to get to grips with!
